NSW: Show your colours: support our Paralympians

SYDNEY, Aug 7 AAP - Australia's paralympic team today launched a vigorous fundraisingdrive for its 2004 Olympics campaign.

Launching its Whose side are you on? campaign, the team is hoping to raise $7 millionto prepare and send its 350-member squad to Greece.

The campaign asks Australians to wear the colours of their favourite National RugbyLeague (NRL) or sporting team to work on Friday September 6, and make a donation to thecause.

"We ask the workers of Australia to show their true colours by turning up to work onFriday September 6, in their NRL or other sporting team colours and put some money towardthis great cause," NSW Premier Bob Carr told those gathered for the launch.

Mr Carr was among the political and business leaders who joined with paralympic andNRL stars today at the launch.

Corporations were asked to register with the Australian Paralympic Committee, to getemployees to pay a donation to wear their jerseys at work.

Mr Carr said the Australian paralympians deserved support.

"We know that these people are part of the best paralympian team in the world," Mr Carr said.

"(But) the fact is our elite athletes will need more than our adulation, they will need money.

"There is a target of $7 million.

"Now there are 19 million people in Australia, that would mean each Australian donating37 cents, a small price to pay for paralympic glory."

Mr Carr kicked off proceedings with a $150,000 donation on behalf of the state government.
